I believe that every leader should participate in a coaching network, either formally or informally. Many people in ministry, whether as a pastor or other ministry leader can benefit hugely from being coached by someone who has been where you want to go. I have been part of some informal church planting coaching networks, but more recently got involved in one that is much more formal. Nelson Searcy, Lead Pastor of Journey Church invited me to be part of a coaching network for Lead Pastors.
I have known Nelson for several years, first meeting him when Journey Church and Lake Ridge Church where I was pastoring was featured in a video from Saddleback Church for the initial 40 Days of Purpose campaign. Since then I have corresponded with Nelson regarding different issues I would need guidance on. The coaching began in January and meets once a month in Tampa for a time of intensive training leading the church. One negative of our first meeting a couple of weeks ago was that it was 48 degrees in Tampa the day of our coaching session.
Benefits of being part of a coaching network are as I have mentioned is learning from someone who has been where you want to go. In Nelson's coaching I am building a network of friendships with other people who are where we are that I can talk to on a regular basis. Also, you are required and challenged to put into practice what you are being taught. If not, you face the wrath and possible expulsion from the network. Being around these guys I know will help me jump start ideas I have been tossing around.
