Work is a noble thing for all people to do regardless of age, race, sex, tall or short and thick or thin. We all should love to work as it brings personal fulfillment, rewards to our family in the way of survival, and a general accomplishment of a job well done. Except, when you hate the work you do. I think God has wired us to work. He gave us work to do as a component to help bring fulfillment and levels of satisfaction in our lives. You read the Bible and you’ll see work all through it. The Bible says that God instilled that desire for work within you. The Bible says God worked to create the world. He worked for your salvation and redemption. He works to meet your needs. And He calls us to be coworkers with Him.

My Dad was one of the most hard working men who ever walked the face of the earth. Part of the reason for that was because he had to go to work after the eigth-grade because his father passed away and he was the only boy in the home with five sisters. Another reason was he and my Mom had nine kids they had to provide for. Great example of a man who loved his work. There are times I admit when I hated work and I want to share what to do when that happens.

1. You Need To Figure Out Reasons You Overwork

Many of us hate our work because we are overworked or we just overwork. Some of you are working yourselves to death trying to earn the approval from someone who will never give it. You might be trying to keep up with everyone else out there. Could be I just want more stuff. The more stuff we get the more we have to work and the more we work the more we can afford to get more stuff and we get into this whole deal.

Look inside to see what is driving you to work, work, work and once you understand what it is – let it go.

2. Prepare and Beware Of The Results Of Overwork

  • relationships fall victim to overwork
  • productivity suffers
  • health deteriorates
  • resentment will build

3. Make A Life Where Work Is Healthy

There are two extremes here: All work and no play OR All play and no work. There has to be a healthy balance here and you need to find it to have a healthy work life. We hate our jobs because we are overworked, underpaid, under challenged or all three. Ask yourself a question right now, “Does my work define who I am?” If the answer is “Yes”, then you will need to start seeking God’s help and guidance before you stop reading this blog. Maybe some should consider a career change.

4. Have A Change Of Heart About Work

This is the one I would recommend to most people who hate their work. Could it be that God has you where you are for a reason, only of it is for a season? I know it is cliche’, but what can you do to be a part of the solution, not the problem? How can you pray for the company you work for, those over you in leadership, those you work with, and your customers? Imagine your workplace as your ministry location.  Imagine the men and women around you as people needing a touch of God’s love.  Imagine that it’s God who placed you in that corner of the building, on that floor of the office, in that classroom at school and He wants you to be His representative, His minister right there.  Imagine how that could transform the experience you have at work even this week.
