The Eagle Has Returned

It looks like Spring is finally winning the war over Winter here in NE Ohio. With spring comes new life and wonderful happenings like the blooming of flower and trees. Each spring we especially wait on a few things to happen and one of the is the sighting of the Golden Eagles that hang out in the woods behind our house. And so it happened yesterday, three Golden Eagles flying around, chasing each other and squawking at one another. What a splendid sight! What a magnificent creature we can learn from.

Eagles never sit around wondering what all the other eagles think or how the hawks feel about them. They don’t worry about stirring the nest. They understand who they are. You don’t see eagles on Dr. Phil or Oprah talking about their problems and issues. Eagles know that they’re eagles. They teach their eaglets to fly. They are confident; it’s built into their DNA. They are creatures of doing, not complaining or playing the blame game. It is amazing to read about or watch a documentary on how eagles train their eaglets.

There’s three things the eagle does with the eaglet.

He disturbs

He will not let the eaglet sit there and not learn to fly. He ruffles the nest. Because you don’t have the courage to disturb your children, you buy a van or a suburban with a DVD player or you get individual screens with headsets so you don’t have to talk to them driving from the house to the grocery store. There’s no conversation when you have them in a confined environment.
We provide entertainment because we refuse to provide exhortation. Then we don’t feel we’re responsible for training them up to be godly men and women. So they ride down the road and go mindless, and they don’t think. We have a generation who doesn’t think.

He demonstrates

He doesn’t just say what needs to be done, but he demonstrates how to do it. The eagle shows the eaglet how toThere is an axiom of leadership that goes:  I Do, You Watch. I Do, You Help. You Do, I Help. You Do, I Watch. You Do, Someone Else Watches.

He develops

The eagle will shove the eaglet out of the nest, about a mile up from the ground. Just when the eaglet thinks it’s hopeless, the mom swoops in to catch it. An eagle will never learn to fly by watching videos about flying. You’ve got to get out of your comfort zone and fly!

Your eaglets are definitely your children and  grandchildren and we must take special attention to disturb, demonstrate, and develop them. This also applies to those you work with, work for, and work above. In order to be a great leader, you have to be a great eagle!
