It seems like the issue of Intelligent Design is geting major attention around the country as lawsuits are being filed in several states to stop the teaching of ID in schools systems. Those who back ID believe that ID should have an equal stage with the teaching of the theory of evolution. The problem that the scientific community in general has with ID, is that ID cannot stand on the same ground as scientific thought. The ID movement has gotten lots of press lately as many states are beginning to seriously consider introducing ID into their curriculums.  Of course, this is raising the controversy to a higher  profile in our country. The concept of ID has been attributed mainly to conservative Christians who will do whatever it takes to get God back into schools.

There are all kinds of reasons for saying that there is no God.
There’s all kinds of reasons for exchanging the truth of God for a lie.
And I want to ask some of you right now: Is that why some of you hold
the position that there is no God?  I think you look outside, I think
it’s pretty evident that a design as majestic as the creation outside
required a designer. You got a little better explanation than there is
a supreme moral being, a God who put it all into place? Let me be quick
to say: There are some honest people who really do have legitimate
questions about the evidence for God. Those questions deserve being
asked.

If we know that the creation had a beginning and we know that the beginning was caused, there is one last question for us to answer–what was the cause? The Bible tells us that God was the cause. We are further told that the God who did the causing did so with planning and reason and logic. Romans 1:20 tells us that we can know God is "through the things he has made." The atheist, on the other hand, will try to convince us that we are the product of chance. Julian Huxley once said: “We are as much a product of blind forces as is the falling of a stone to earth or the ebb and flow of the tides. We have just happened, and man was made flesh by a long series of singularly beneficial accidents.”

Perhaps the most convincing evidence for God is the way in which He has changed the lives of men as nothing ever has. It may be argued that this sort of evidence is by its very nature subjective. But we have already seen that the Christian has an objective reality to back up and to provide the basis for his subjective experience.  “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”        Romans 1:20 (NIV)

Consider the design of water. Water has a host of unique properties absolutely indispensable for life. For example it is the only known substance whose solid phase (ice) is less dense than its liquid phase. That is why ice forms on the top of oceans and lakes instead of on the bottom allowing fish and other marine life to survive the winter. From a scientific standpoint, “the various properties of water are nothing short of miraculous,” writes Michael Corey in his book God and the New Cosmology, “no other compound even comes close to duplicating its many life-supporting properties.” Water seems specifically designed to support all life on this planet.

When you take a look up at this universe you see that it is too complex to just be a product of chance. God designed it, that’s the only explanation. That is why David said in Psalm 19:1 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Because only the hands of a great God could have designed this universe.

Look for this issue to be a hot political topic in the months and years to come. As a matter of fact, President Bush just a few weeks ago mentioned ID in a speech saying that ID ahould be taught in our schools alongside the theory of evolution. Politically speaking, that could be political suicide or political savvy, depending your point of view.
