This Sunday I will begin a new teaching series on the life of Jonah, titled "Learning From the Life of Jonah" (subtitle:a Bonehead Prophet). Most of us remember Jonah from one event in his life – that he was snack food for a very large fish. In reality, Jonah was a prophet of God in the Old Testament who had been used by God to deliver a message that the northern kingdom of Israel would be expanded (2 Kings).

In the book of Jonah we see a guy who gets a second assignment from God and declines God’s assignment to preach to the people of Nineveh. Once Jonah tells God "no", the comedy of consequences begins. I don’t use the word comedy lightly, but when you read what happens to Jonah you can’t help but think, "what were you thinking Jonah when you said no?" Just because you hate the people that God loves is no reason to disobey the God that loves you.  That is exactly what Jonah did. This Sunday I will be sharing on Say Yes To God.  There are many benefits/reasons to say yes to God and apparently Jonah ignored them all because he was a bonehead! Let me define bonehead: someone who does stupid things without considering the consequences to himself or others.  I will officially submit this definition to Websters today.

Over the next few weeks on Mondays, I will share my teaching notes and comments with you from that Sunday’s teaching. In the mean time, I would encourage you to read the book of Jonah.

Have a great Super Bowl weekend!
