Darrin Patrick

Here are my notes from a break out session I was in with Darrin Patrick, pastor of Journey Church in St Louis. He spoke on Raising Up Good Leaders.

Timothy the church planter and Paul as his coach.

Self Leadership
What is going on within you?

You have to cultivate a deep gospel identity for yourself. 1 Timothy 1:8.
Do you understand your motivations?
If you are slow to believe the gospel you are in trouble. You must believe in the gospel for yourself and not only for those outside the church.

What you need in a leader is someone who is fully aware of their sin.

Some pitfalls
Acts 20:28-30

Fierce wolves would come into the flock to destroy your church. You may be equipping your own assassin. Most wolves come from your own core group. They are probably already there.

Don’t be wowed by a person’s gifting.
Don’t appoint elders and call them such too soon.

Don’t give into age and insecurity. If God has called you to plant a church, you are God’s man for the job. He has called you.
There is wisdom in bringing older people in for advice.

You need to be suspicious of people who come together as a group to be part of your church. There could be a reason while they are there.

React because of pressure
When you get scared you get desperate. When you get desperate, you make bad decisions.
Don’t let your worship leader define your worship service

Leadership Tension
You have to wrestle with change vs. stability
Always treat your church like a church plant. Stay a missionary. Re-launch you church every fall.

Shepherding vs. Leadership
Shepherd is using ministry to get people done
Leadership is using people to get ministry done
