The basic concept of a trust places a separate legal entity in control of financial assets (property, savings, etc.) for the benefit of the beneficiary of the trust. The individual who establishes the trust is referred to as the donor or grantor and the group or entity responsible for managing and executing the trust is known as the trustee.
Jesus said in Matthew 6, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “
Powerful words. Let’s try to unpack them a little bit.
Jesus says, Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth. Why not? Because treasures are bad? No. Simply because they will not last. John D. Rockefeller was one of the wealthiest men who ever lived. When he had died a journalist asked his accountant “How much money did John D. leave?” The accountant thought about it for a moment then said, “He left all of it.” You can’t take it with you.
So Jesus is telling us don’t store up treasures on earth, not because it’s wrong to do so, but because it just doesn’t make sense. And God wants us to do what makes sense. Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, Jesus says. Why? Because it’s right? No. Because it’s smart! Treasures in heaven will last. So God is not against us storing up treasures. In fact, He commands us to store up treasures. He commands us to store up treasures that will last. Relocate your treasures from earth to heaven. Store up treasures for yourself.
You can’t take it with you but here in Matthew 6 Jesus gives us a qualification of that. Yes, you can’t take it with you but you can send it on ahead. If we grab hold of this truth it will change our lives radically.
Each of us were made for a person and made for a place. Jesus is that person and heaven is that place. We’ll never be satisfied with any person less than Jesus. And we’ll never be satisfied with any place less than heaven. So which would you rather have – treasures on earth that don’t satisfy and you can’t keep anyway? Or treasures in heaven far beyond any on earth and which will last forever? Which would you rather have? Duh! It’s obvious! If you’re thinking correctly you would rather have the treasures in heaven.
