Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the
LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say,
'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" The woman said to
the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God
did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of
the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ "You will not
surely die," the serpent said to the woman. For God knows that when
you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God,
knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree
was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining
wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,
who was with her, and he ate it (Gen 3:1-7).

These verses from Genesis show that even in the very beginning of earth there was evil. Adam and Eve in and of themselves were not evil creations and were not the objects of evil. Also, it was not the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil that brought evil into the natural world. It was merely the fact that God had instructed Adam and Eve not to eat from this particular tree. As seen in these scriptures, evil entered into the natural world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. The serpent, Satan wanted to destroy God’s greatest creation, humans. Tempting and leading Adam and Eve to disobey God introduced the human race introduced to the reality of evil. In C.S. Lewis', The Screwtape Letters, Lewis creates the same objective plan trying to be carried out by two demons, Screwtape and Wormwood.

That dynamic of good and evil still continues today in the modern culture through the existence of laws and morals. It is because of these morals, which are taught by parents and religious institutions, that the recognition between right and wrong and good and evil is in existence. Civil laws were created to protect the citizens from the harm that may be done by those with evil and harmful intentions, such as terrorists who come into countries to destroy democracy. In logic, the laws that the government has were put in place to promote the doing of right and good.

Throughout the ages philosophers have argued whether good and evil really exist. Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was one of these philosophers. Nietzsche wrote Beyond Good and Evil, which he used as a vehicle to attack past philosophers for blindly accepting the Christian doctrine and also for the lacking critical sense that some philosophers had (D'Arcy). In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche tried to go past just good and evil by leaving behind traditional morality. The argument of good and evil actually also exist in most world religions. For example, Hinduism states that good and evil only exist in our minds.  In Buddhism, there is no way to deal with evil. The Buddhists believe “that evil is just another form of suffering, which is caused by ignorance” (Cejudo). In Christianity, it is believed that evil entered through the fall of Lucifer, a high angel who is referred to as “The Father Below” in The Screwtape Letters. Thus God represents all things that are good, holy and pure while Lucifer embodies evil.

In his book, How Good is Good Enough, Andy Stanley shares that everyone’s definition of good is not the same. Stanley says, “First of all, if good people go to Heaven then we need a clear and consistent definition for what is good. We need a list. We need to know that the rules reflect God’s standard, not something manufactured by important looking guys in robes”(Stanley, pg 25) If someone believes that being good is all it will take to get into Heaven, their theological beliefs are not following biblical teachings. The problem with this mindset is that the Bible does not state how much good is good enough to get us into Heaven. Will being a good person twenty percent of someone’s life get them into Heaven? Will thirty percent or forty percent? This is why the teaching that being a good person will get you into Heaven is flawed. So if being a good person is not the standard for Heaven, then what is? According to the Bible, the standards for getting into Heaven are to believe in Christ, follow his teaching and become one of his disciples.
